You search “best Jira plugins for developers” and the first page gives you three lists. Each is written by a company that sells a Jira app, and each puts its own app first: Marker.io’s list starts with Marker.io, GitKraken’s with Git Integration for Jira, Catapult Labs’ with Agile Retrospectives. None says how many teams use what it recommends.

So we counted. We pulled every Jira Cloud app from the Marketplace categories for code, CI/CD, deployments, testing and code quality, plus searches for GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and pull requests, and kept the developer tools with at least 10 installs: 211 apps with 321,416 installs, priced for a 50-user site, on 4 November 2026.

Short answer: developers mostly install free connectors made by the tool’s own vendor. GitHub for Atlassian alone has 138,440 installs, 43% of all 211 developer apps’ installs; the top 10 have 80%. Start with the connector for your Git host (GitHub, GitLab or Azure DevOps; Bitbucket needs no app) and your CI (Jenkins, CircleCI), all free. Add a test manager if QA works in Jira: Xray and Zephyr lead, at about $3,600 a year for 50 users. 65 of the 211 still run on Connect, which loses support on 31 January 2027.

Horizontal bar chart of the 12 most installed developer apps for Jira Cloud out of 211 with at least 10 installs, 321,416 installs in all, on 4 November 2026. GitHub for Atlassian by Atlassian: 138,440 installs, free. GitLab for Jira Cloud by GitLab: 32,160, free. Xray Test Management by Xblend: 25,250, $3,640 a year at 50 users. Zephyr Test Management by SmartBear: 14,753, $3,710. TestRail Integration by Gurock: 10,261, free. Zephyr Essential by SmartBear: 9,894, $3,175. Git Integration for Jira by GitKraken: 8,204, $1,305. Jenkins for Jira (Official) by Atlassian: 7,311, free. Azure DevOps for Jira (Official) by Atlassian: 6,897, free, a Connect app. GitHub Copilot for Jira by GitHub: 3,815, free. CircleCI for Jira by CircleCI: 3,772, free. AIO Tests by Navarambh: 3,447, free up to 10 users, $1,150 at 50. Free apps are drawn in indigo, paid in grey. GitHub for Atlassian alone has 43% of all developer-app installs; the top 10 have 80%. Source: Atlassian Marketplace REST API v2.

Two patterns run through the table. Integrations are free, workflows are paid: the vendor of GitHub, CircleCI or LaunchDarkly gives the Jira app away because it sells the tool behind it, while apps that bring their own workflow into Jira (test management above all) charge for it. And installs are concentrated: a handful of official connectors hold most of the market, and most of the other 200 apps have a few hundred installs or fewer.

A note on the categories themselves: 75 more apps sit in the same Marketplace developer categories but are not developer tools, with 70,226 installs. The biggest is a checklist app (30,146 installs) listed under Testing & QA, alongside exporters, planning poker and canned responses. We left them out of every number on this page.

Start with the free official app. Atlassian’s guide to connecting GitHub Cloud: install GitHub for Atlassian, then connect a GitHub organization. You need “Site administrator permission for your Jira site” and “Organization owner permission for your GitHub organization”, so plan for two people if those are different. Then the linking rule: put the work item key in branch names, commits and pull request titles (“git checkout -b JRA-123-<branch-name>”), and Jira shows the branches, commits and pull requests on the work item, on the board and in releases. The app can also share your GitHub data with Rovo; Atlassian’s setup asks whether to keep “Show GitHub data in Rovo” on.

Bitbucket needs no app. Bitbucket Cloud connects from Jira itself: in a software space, open Development, select Connections, then Connect Bitbucket and choose a workspace, as Atlassian’s Bitbucket guide describes.

When a paid Git app is worth it. The official apps are free and the most installed, and they are also rated low: GitHub for Atlassian 3.3 from 511 reviews, GitLab for Jira Cloud 2.8 from 342. The paid GitKraken app is rated 4.4 from 343 reviews and covers GitHub, GitLab and Azure DevOps in one place, at $1,305 a year for 50 users. Pay for it if you need several Git hosts in one view or the official app’s sync is not keeping up; otherwise the free one does the job most teams need, linking code to work items.

Azure DevOps is the odd one. Atlassian’s own Azure DevOps for Jira is a Connect app, last released in November 2025. Atlassian ends support for Connect apps on 31 January 2027: “end of support means ‘use at your own risk’” and “Only critical or security-related bugs will be addressed”. Teams on Azure Repos should watch whether it moves to Forge, or look at the Forge alternatives in the table.

The pattern is the same as for code: the CI vendor’s own app is free and brings builds and deployments into Jira. Jenkins for Jira (Official) is Atlassian’s, free and rated 4.6. All 12 feature-flag apps we found are free, from LaunchDarkly (1,779 installs) to Flagsmith and Unleash; 8 of them are Connect apps.

One warning in this table: Azure Pipelines for Jira (Deprecated) says so in its name, has not been released since 2019, is a Connect app, and still has 2,584 installs. If it is on your site, it is time to replace it.

Test management

Testing is the biggest paid category: 92 apps, and the leaders charge from the first user. Two kinds of app hide under “test management”. Test managers inside Jira (Xray, Zephyr, AIO Tests, QAlity) store test cases and runs as Jira work items or in the app, and charge for it; Xray and Zephyr cost about $3,600 a year for 50 users. Connectors to an outside tool (TestRail, Qase, Tricentis qTest) are free in Jira because you pay for the test tool itself.

If your QA team already has a test tool, take its free connector. If testing has to live in Jira, AIO Tests is the best-rated of the big ones (4.9 from 115 reviews, free up to 10 users, $1,150 at 50), and Xray is the most installed.

All small in installs next to the connectors above. Note who makes them: the SonarQube app is published by excentia, a partner, not by Sonar. The engineering-metrics apps (Swarmia, Multitudes, DevDynamics, Antenna) are free in the Marketplace and connect Jira to the vendor’s own product, which is sold separately.

GitHub’s own Copilot app is the only AI developer app with real adoption: 3,815 installs, against under 100 for each of the others. The rest are mostly backlog and story-writing assistants rather than coding agents. Expect this table to change fastest.

How to pick, in order

  1. Your Git host’s connector, free: GitHub for Atlassian, GitLab for Jira Cloud, or Azure DevOps; Bitbucket from Jira’s own Development settings.
  2. Your CI’s connector, free: Jenkins for Jira (Official), CircleCI, or your deploy tool’s app, so builds and deployments show on work items and releases.
  3. Your feature-flag tool’s app, free, if you release behind flags.
  4. Test management, if QA works in Jira: a free connector if you already pay for a test tool, otherwise AIO Tests, Xray or Zephyr.
  5. Check the platform before you build on it. 65 of the 211 apps are Connect apps; after 31 January 2027 they are “use at your own risk”.
  6. Count the whole site’s users. Paid Marketplace apps bill on every user of the Jira site, not only the developers, so a 200-person Jira with 30 engineers pays the 200-user price.

Where our apps fit

We make two apps for the developer side of Jira, both small next to the leaders above, and we say so.

  • Mermaid Diagrams & Mind Maps in Tabs for Jira puts diagrams written as text on work items and project pages, in tabs: Mermaid sequence and class diagrams for a design, BPMN, Graphviz, LaTeX math. It has 34 installs, is free for up to 10 users and costs $125 a year for 50. Our Mermaid in Jira guide compares all 16 Mermaid apps for Jira, ours included.
  • Secret Sentinel watches the place developers paste tokens when they should not: Jira summaries, descriptions and comments. When someone saves an API key or a connection string, it replaces the value in place and can open a security incident. It is free for up to 10 users and costs $165 a year for 50 in Jira. It does not scan code repositories; use your Git host’s secret scanning for that.

How we counted

  • Source: the Atlassian Marketplace REST API v2, 4 November 2026. We searched Jira Cloud apps in the categories Source code, Repository connectors, Repository hooks, Code review, Code quality, Continuous integration, Build management, Deployments, Testing & QA and IDE, plus text searches for github, gitlab, bitbucket and “pull request”: 1,249 distinct apps.
  • In scope: developer tools with at least 10 installs, 211 apps and 321,416 installs. We read the names and categories and left out 75 apps in those categories that are not developer tools (checklists, exporters, planning poker, CRM and work-management syncs).
  • Per app: installs and ratings from the listing; the platform from versions/latest?hosting=cloud (Connect when the latest version deploys as Connect); prices from pricing/cloud/live, the annual commercial tier for 50 users. “Free up to 10 users” means a $0 10-user tier.
  • Other sources: Atlassian’s guides to GitHub and Bitbucket, and the Connect end of support announcement with its January 2027 date. The three vendor lists in the introduction are the top Google results for “jira plugins for developers” on 4 November 2026; each one’s first pick is its own vendor’s app, which we checked against the Marketplace listings.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Jira plugins for developers?

By installs, the free official connectors: GitHub for Atlassian (138,440 installs), GitLab for Jira Cloud (32,160), Jenkins for Jira (7,311), Azure DevOps for Jira (6,897) and CircleCI for Jira (3,772). For testing, Xray (25,250) and Zephyr (14,753) lead, both paid from the first user. Start with the connector for your Git host and your CI, then add a test tool if QA lives in Jira.

How do I connect GitHub to Jira?

Install the free GitHub for Atlassian app from the Marketplace, then connect a GitHub organization; you need Jira site admin and GitHub organization owner rights. After that, put the Jira key in branch names, commit messages and pull request titles, for example "git checkout -b JRA-123-<branch-name>", and the branches, commits and pull requests appear on the work item.

Do I need a plugin to connect Bitbucket to Jira?

No. Bitbucket Cloud connects from Jira's own settings: in a software space, open Development, select Connections, then Connect Bitbucket and choose a workspace. Business and service spaces have the same option under their settings. No Marketplace app is involved.

Are Jira developer plugins free?

Many are. Of the 211 developer apps we counted, 104 are free at any site size, 70 are free up to 10 users and then paid, and 37 are paid from the first user. The free ones are mostly integrations made by the tool's own vendor (GitHub, GitLab, CircleCI, LaunchDarkly), who earn from the tool, not the app. Test management is the expensive part: Xray costs $3,640 a year for 50 users and Zephyr $3,710.

Which developer apps for Jira still use Connect?

65 of the 211, including Atlassian's own Azure DevOps for Jira (Official) and the deprecated Azure Pipelines for Jira, which still has 2,584 installs and has not been released since 2019. Atlassian ends support for Connect apps on 31 January 2027 and says end of support means "use at your own risk", so check the platform before you build a workflow on an app.

Is GitHub Copilot available in Jira?

Yes, GitHub publishes GitHub Copilot for Jira, free in the Marketplace (3,815 installs on 4 November 2026), plus a separate version for GitHub Enterprise Cloud with data residency. It is the most installed AI app for developers in Jira by a wide margin; the next AI apps have under 100 installs each.
